    Toco-createnewsocialrealities,wehavetoworkwithtwodistinctfundamentalforcesthatareintension:powerandlove.Thisassertionrequiresanexplanationbecausethewords"power"and"love"aredefinedbysomanydifferentpeopleinsomanydifferentways.InthisbookIusetwounusualdefinitionsofpowerandlovesuggestedbytheologianandphilosopherPaulTillich.Hisdefinitionsareontological:theydealwithwhatandwhypowerandloveare,ratherthanwhattheyenableorproduce.Iusethesedefinitionsbecausetheyringtruewithmyexperienceofwhatinpracticeisrequiredtoaddresstoughchallengesatalllevels:individual,group,community,society.

    Tillichdefinespoweras"thedriveofeverythinglivingtorealizeitself,withincreasingintensityandextensity."Sopowerinthissenseisthedrivetoachieveone'spurpose,togetone'sjobdone,togrow.Hedefinesloveas"thedrivetowardstheunityoftheseparated."[2]Soloveinthissenseisthedrivetoreconnectandmakewholethatwhichhasbecomeorappearsfragmented.Thesetwowaysoflookingatpowerandlove,ratherthanthemorecommonideasofoppressivepowerandromanticlove(representedonthecoverbythegrenadeandtherose),areatthecoreofthisbook.
